Marks: 48
CHEMISTRY (SUBJECTIVE TYPE)
Time: 1:45 minute
Part – I
2.Write short answers to any Five (5) questions:[5×2=10]
(i)
Why are Polymers important in daily life?
Polymers are used in clothing (nylon, polyester), packaging, containers, pipes, furniture, electrical insulation, medicines and many household items because they are light, strong, durable and cheap.
(ii)
How does addition polymerization occur?
Monomers having a double bond (C=C) join one after another. The double bond opens with the help of an initiator/catalyst and each monomer links to the growing chain, with no loss of any small molecule. Example: n CH2=CH2 → [−CH2−CH2−]n
(iii)
Why does Polymerization continue at both ends?
Because each monomer in condensation polymerization has two reactive functional groups, so the chain keeps growing from both of its ends.
(iv)
How composition of polymer can changed? Give its importance.
By changing the type and proportion of the monomers used (e.g. mixing two different monomers). Importance: it lets us tailor properties such as strength, flexibility, melting point and chemical resistance for a particular use.
(v)
How starting monomer are prepare from addition monomer?
Starting monomers such as ethene (CH2=CH2) and propene are obtained from petroleum and natural gas by cracking of hydrocarbons.
(vi)
How dicarboxylic acid recover from polyester?
By hydrolysis of the polyester with water (acid or base). The ester linkages (−COO−) break and the dicarboxylic acid and the diol are recovered.
(vii)
Write the uses of Plastics.
Packaging, bottles and containers, pipes, toys, bags, electrical insulation, non-stick coatings (Teflon), furniture and household items.
(viii)
Write the properties of plastics.
Light weight, flexible, durable, strong, resistant to chemicals and water, poor conductors of heat and electricity, and cheap to produce.
3.Write short answers to any Five (5) questions:[5×2=10]
(i)
What is Synthetic fibers? Give example.
Man-made fibers produced from chemical polymers instead of plants or animals. Examples: nylon, polyester, acrylic.
(ii)
Write the properties of Synthetic fiber.
Strong, durable, light weight, wrinkle resistant, quick drying, and resistant to chemicals, moths and mildew.
(iii)
Which natural fiber does acrylic resemble and why?
Wool, because acrylic is soft, warm and light, and is used as a cheaper substitute for woollen clothing.
(iv)
Why is Burning Plastic dangerous?
It releases toxic gases and fumes that pollute the air and cause breathing problems and other health hazards.
(v)
Give an example of a commercial product which is formed using polyethene.
Polythene shopping bags (also bottles, pipes and packaging film).
(vi)
How an ester linkage between two monomer is formed?
The −COOH group of a dicarboxylic acid reacts with the −OH group of a diol. A molecule of water is eliminated and an ester linkage (−COO−) is formed.
(vii)
How does condensation polymerization occur?
Monomers having two functional groups join together, and a small molecule such as H2O or HCl is eliminated at every step.
(viii)
How polymers are useful for us?
They provide clothing, packaging, building materials, medical items, electrical insulation and household goods that are strong, light and cheap.
4.Write short answers to any Five (5) questions:[5×2=10]
(i)
Draw the structure of polyamide linkage.
The amide linkage (−CONH−):
R−CO||−NH−R
(ii)
Give two examples each of addition polymers and condensation polymers.
Addition polymers: polythene, PVC, Teflon, polypropylene.
Condensation polymers: nylon-6,6, polyester (PET).
(iii)
How synthetic fibers are different from natural fibers?
Synthetic fibers are man-made from chemicals (nylon, polyester), are stronger, dry quickly and resist wrinkles and moths, but are not biodegradable. Natural fibers come from plants or animals (cotton, wool, silk) and are biodegradable.
(iv)
Are natural polymers hazardous for the environment? Explain why?
No. Natural polymers such as cellulose, starch and proteins are biodegradable; microorganisms break them down into harmless substances, so they do not accumulate.
(v)
Why is it dangerous to burn discarded articles made of plastics?
Burning plastics gives off poisonous gases and smoke that pollute the air and harm human health.
(vi)
Why is it not advisable to dump discarded synthetic articles in oceans?
They are non-biodegradable and last for hundreds of years. They pollute the water and harm or kill fish, birds and other marine life that swallow or get trapped in them.
(vii)
What is the role of catalyst in addition polymerization?
The catalyst (initiator) starts the reaction by opening the double bond of the monomer, and speeds up the formation of the polymer chain.
(viii)
Deduce the monomer from the following addition polymers.
(a) CH2−CH|Cln
(b) CH2−CH|CNn
(a) Vinyl chloride (chloroethene): CH2=CHCl
(b) Acrylonitrile (vinyl cyanide): CH2=CH−CN
Part – II
NOTE:- Attempt any two questions.[9×2=18]
5.
(a)
What is polymerization? Give its importance.
Polymerization is the process in which many small monomer molecules join to form a large polymer molecule.
Importance: it produces plastics, synthetic fibres (nylon, polyester), rubber and coatings (Teflon) that are strong, light, flexible and chemically resistant, and cheap to make.
(b)
Write about types of polymers.
  • By source: natural polymers (starch, cellulose, proteins, natural rubber) and synthetic polymers (polythene, nylon, polyester).
  • By reaction: addition polymers (from monomers with double bonds, no by-product, e.g. polythene, PVC) and condensation polymers (monomers with two functional groups, a small molecule such as H2O or HCl is lost, e.g. nylon-6,6, polyester).
6.
(a)
Define Condensation Polymerizations. Write its properties.
Definition: a reaction in which monomers having two functional groups join together with the loss of a small molecule (H2O, HCl) at each step.
  • Monomers contain two functional groups.
  • A small molecule is eliminated at every step.
  • It is a step-growth reaction.
  • Linkages such as amide (−CONH−) or ester (−COO−) are formed, e.g. nylon-6,6 and polyester.
(b)
Write structure of monomer from polymer.

Polymers are broken at their linkages to give the monomers:

  • Polyamide (nylon-6,6) → diamine H2N−(CH2)6−NH2 + dicarboxylic acid HOOC−(CH2)4−COOH
  • Polythene [−CH2−CH2−]n → ethene CH2=CH2
  • Polyester → diol + dicarboxylic acid
7.
(a)
Describe the role of synthetic polymers in the textile industry.
Synthetic fibres such as nylon, polyester and acrylic make up most of the material used in the clothing industry worldwide. They are strong, light, wrinkle resistant and quick drying, resist moths and mildew, and are cheaper than natural fibres. Acrylic imitates wool and polyester is blended with cotton for everyday clothes.
(b)
Describe the effects of synthetic polymers on the environment.
  • Most synthetic polymers are non-biodegradable and remain for hundreds of years.
  • Plastic waste pollutes land, rivers, oceans and air.
  • Animals, birds and marine life swallow or get trapped in plastic waste.
  • Burning plastics releases toxic gases that harm air quality and health.
  • Remedy: reduce, reuse and recycle plastics.
